DOWNSTAIRS PRODUCTIONS (Ilya Lipkin and Joen Vedel)

Untitled, 2012, HD Video, 10'

“It always feels good to run a little bit, if you're feeling anxious, or if your back is sore from sitting at the laptop all day. The treadmill is repetitive, but dependable, and the soft music, though a little bland, can be strangely soothing—like the gym itself, and the sweatsuited people there, even though most of the time you don’t wind up speaking to or looking at anybody but yourself. After a long day, sometimes you really have to drag yourself, but I find what the poster says is true. It’s an investment in your well-being, and, in the end, it really pays.

We live in confusing times, and lots of things can be difficult to manage—professional life, errands, appointments, friendships, mental health. There are deadlines, sure, but it’s all so much more overwhelming when you realize you’re not doing it for anybody but yourself. Self-control—self-discipline—is hard to come by. It’s like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it, it gets softer, and weaker, and pudgier, until one day you just can’t do anything at all.”
